Dear Spartan Community,
We are writing to provide an important update to the worldwide breach of the Canvas platform that impacted our campus operations several weeks ago.
The CSU Chancellor's Office and SJSU leadership have been monitoring the progress of the forensics process that has taken place in the aftermath of the incident.
Instructure, Canvas’ parent company, has informed SJSU and our Chancellor’s Office that SJSU Canvas data was not exfiltrated in this incident. Instructure will provide additional confirmation once their third-party data review is complete.
That is obviously good news. In addition, on May 8th SJSU Information Technology Services, working with the CSU Chancellors Office IT and Analytics team, was able to create nightly backups of SJSU Canvas tables containing course materials and grades. That service was developed through use of the CSU Snowflake Data Lake.
We will continue to provide updates as we have more meaningful information to share, and encourage you to continue visiting https://www.instructure.com/incident_update.
Sincerely,
Chris Wessells, Interim Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer
