Academic Integrity Policy - Campus Updates for Students

Dear Spartans,

As we have started the academic year 2026/27, I want to welcome you back and wish you well in the months ahead! 

The value of your SJSU education comes not only from what you learn, but from the work you put into earning it. Academic integrity protects that work and helps ensure that every student is evaluated fairly.

The Academic Senate has approved an updated Academic Integrity Policy (S26-10) [pdf]. The revised policy responds to changes in teaching, learning, and technology, including the growing use of artificial intelligence, while reaffirming our shared expectations for honesty, fairness, and accountability.

For most students, very little will change. If you do your own work, follow your instructor’s directions, and ask questions when something is unclear, you are already meeting these expectations.

Using Artificial Intelligence Responsibly

One important update concerns artificial intelligence. Rules for using AI may vary by course and assignment. Your instructors will explain what is permitted, so please read your syllabus and assignment instructions carefully. If you are unsure whether you may use an AI tool—or how you should acknowledge its use—ask your instructor before submitting your work. A short conversation in advance can prevent confusion later.

In addition, SJSU provides a number of resources to help students navigate the ethical use of generative and agentic AI tools. These include, for example, the AI Writer’s Toolbox put together collaboratively by staff and faculty working with the SJSU Writing Center, where you can also book tutoring appointments. Students also have access to a course on AI Literacy Essentials designed by our Center for Excellence and Teaching Innovation. This course has been built by faculty and staff and helps students think through the use of AI in their everyday lives and in their academic work. The SJSU Career Center also has numerous training opportunities for students as well, all of which also help students navigate the ethical and responsible use of these tools. 

What Happens When a Concern Arises

The revised policy also makes the process clearer when an academic integrity concern arises. Instructors are expected to discuss the concern with you and explain any proposed academic sanction before reporting the matter to Student Conduct and Ethical Development (SCED). Reports must be submitted within the policy’s timeline so concerns can be addressed promptly.

Your Right to Appeal

You also have the right to appeal if you believe an academic sanction was issued in error or the policy was not followed. Appeals will be reviewed by the Academic Disqualification and Reinstatement Review Committee (ADRRC), providing an independent review of the sanction and an opportunity for you to be heard.

Academic integrity is about more than following rules. It means taking ownership of your education, making responsible choices, and asking for help when you need it. These habits will matter long after you leave SJSU.
