Joseph H. Young

Background:

Dr. Joseph H. Young was a distinguished biologist, educator, and leader whose legacy continues to inspire the community at San José State University. Joining the faculty in 1959, Dr. Young served as Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences for 14 years, fostering a culture of collegiality, inclusion, and academic excellence.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and raised in a small rural town in Idaho his love for science and nature was cultivated at an early age. Dr. Young received a bachelor's degree in economics at Stanford University in 1942 and then enlisted in the Army. During World War II he served in the South Pacific. His entry into biology came after the war when then Mr. Young returned to Stanford and earned a Master of Science in Entomology followed by a Doctorate in Biology in 1954. He taught at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA., for a few years and studied edible shrimp while on the Gulf Coast for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Known for his fairness and unwavering support of diversity, Dr. Young championed the careers of talented individuals, regardless of gender or background, during a time when systemic inequities were prevalent. His commitment to students was equally profound, ensuring that beginning biology courses were taught by the department's most skilled and inspiring instructors.

Dr. Young was a passionate educator who brought biology to life, whether wading through tide pools to explore marine ecosystems or sharing his enthusiasm for the diversity of life. His collaborative spirit extended beyond the classroom, creating a close-knit departmental family and hosting gatherings that fostered lifelong friendships among colleagues and students. Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Young was a dedicated family man, an avid outdoorsman, and a friend to all who knew him. His sense of humor, kindness, and ability to listen left an indelible mark on those around him. His values of compassion, respect, and collaboration continue to shape the department and its community.

Dr. Young’s life was a testament to the power of teaching, leadership, and humanity. He is remembered fondly as a teacher, mentor, and cherished colleague who embodied the spirit of SJSU.
