Change of Major

In-person Change of Major Advising will resume on October 19 for currently matriculated SJSU students who have completed 0–59 units and are interested in changing their major to a program within the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Change of Major Advising is intended to help students review a proposed Spring 2027 course schedule, ask specific questions, and receive feedback based on their academic goals and the information they provide

Prepare Before Attending:

Before signing up for a session, carefully review the change of major requirements for your intended major, including preparation courses, GPA and eligibility criteria, and the application process.

You must complete the following steps before attending:

  • Bring your laptop.
  • Review the change of major requirements for your intended major.
  • Review the Roadmap for your intended major and catalog year.
  • Review MyProgress to identify the requirements you still need to complete.
  • Use your Roadmap and MyProgress to create a proposed Spring 2027 course schedule.
    • Prepare specific questions about the change of major process, major requirements, and registration.

You must arrive with a proposed schedule and review the change of major requirements in advance. Advisors will provide feedback but cannot create a schedule or review all requirements during the session. If you do not complete these requirements you will be asked to reschedule.

Sessions will be offered as follows:

  • Days: Mondays and Thursdays, October 19 through November 19
  • Times: 9:00–11:00 a.m. and 1:30–3:30 p.m.
    • Some dates and times may be adjusted. Please refer to the sign up form for the most up to date availability.
  • Location: MacQuarrie Hall 533
  • How to attend: Complete the Change of Major Advising Sign-Up Form and select the date and time you plan to attend.

Please arrive 5–10 minutes early. To ensure timely support for all students, morning advising ends promptly at 10:45 a.m., and afternoon advising ends promptly at 3:15 p.m.

Note for students with 60+ completed units: Students with 60 or more completed units who are interested in changing their major must meet directly with the department of their intended major. The only exception is students seeking advising support for admission to SJSU’s Nursing program.

Changing Major outside of CHHS

Students interested in majors outside of CHHS should contact the department that offers the major they want to pursue. To find the right contact, refer to the Undergraduate Advisor Directory.

Newly Admitted Students

Newly admitted students must complete their first semester and earn an SJSU GPA before submitting a change of major request. Newly admitted students cannot change their major prior to or during orientation and will need to attend orientation with the college housing their admitted major.

Students interested in changing their major will have an opportunity to let the orientation advisors know that they plan to change majors. This information will be taken into consideration when advising students for their first semester courses.
