Shift Deck: Pragmatic Design Pedagogy Interventions for Climate Resilience

Tomorrow’s design leaders must be prepared to navigate environmental uncertainty and systemic change. Today’s students are eager to take on these challenges, and their education needs to equip them with the right tools. The Shift Deck provides a practical framework of small but powerful interventions that enrich student projects with climate-resilient design strategies. By integrating these approaches, educators can help prepare the next generation of designers to lead the transformations our world urgently needs.
The Shift Deck consists of 27 cards, each introducing a specific “Shift” that educators
can apply to existing assignments. Every card includes a rationale linking the shift
to climate resilience, along with a learning objective that clarifies what students
should gain from the experience. This bottom-up approach enables instructors to embed
climate-conscious practices into their teaching without the need to overhaul entire
courses, creating an accessible pathway for cultivating climate resilience in design
pedagogy.
