Academic Regalia (Cap & Gown)
San José State University and the Spartan Bookstore, in partnership with Herff Jones, are elevating the commencement tradition with custom graduation regalia featuring official SJSU colors and university marks, designed exclusively for our graduates. SJSU graduates will now celebrate their academic achievements in bold Royal Blue, a color that reflects Spartan pride. As you cross the stage, you’ll stand out in attire that reflects the spirit and tradition of San José State.
All students participating in commencement will be required to wear the new blue regalia. We ask that students participating in commencement not borrow from a former student or family member to ensure a unified visual representation of our community’s academic excellence and shared Spartan spirit. Academic regalia is available to purchase in the Spartan Bookstore or the Herff Jones website.
Undergraduate candidates
- Blue Bachelor's graduation gown
- Blue graduation cap (mortarboard)
- Tassel, color-specific for their college.
Credential candidates
Credential candidates are to request academic regalia related to their highest degree level.
If you have not obtained a Master's degree you should request a Undergraduate's academic regalia.
If you have a Master's degree you should request Master's academic regalia.
Master's candidates
- Blue Master's graduation gown (sleeves differ from a Bachelor gown)
- Blue graduation cap (mortarboard)
- Black tassel
- Academic Hood, color-specific for their degree.
Doctoral candidates
Doctoral regalia must be ordered online.
Visit/contact Herff Jones early to get measured and to place your order!
Doctoral academic regalia is specific to their doctorate degree.

Ordering Online
Fall 2025 Commencement ordering has begun. Visit the Herff Jones website to place your order for shipment. Deadline to order is November 22, 2025 8:59 PM.
Shipment costs range between $14.90 (standard) to $32 (international).
In-person @SJSU Spartan Bookstore
Recommended for Undergraduates, Masters, and Credential graduates. This is the fastest & least expensive method after the pre-order website has closed.
Sales begin from the start of Grad Fest through Commencement.

Online (required for Doctoral Graduates)
To order regalia online to ship to your home, please visit the Herff Jones website and choose Custom Doctoral Regalia. Custom doctoral regalia has a 6-week lead time. You may contact your local Herff Jones representative for consultation at bayareagrad@herffjones.com.
A less expensive, non-custom doctoral regalia option is available on Herff Jones website by choosing Cap and Gown. This option is regalia that is similar in quality to the bachlor and master regalia.
Latin Honors Medallions
Latin Honors medallions are presented to eligible undergraduate students who are currently eligible for a Latin Honor. Eligible students will be notified later in the semester by email to their "Preferred Email Address" with instructions for how to pick-up their medallion.
To qualify for Latin Honors, both your Cumulative SJSU GPA and your All College GPA must meet the minimum requirements.

- Summa Cum Laude, GPA range of 3.85-4.0
- Magna Cum Laude, GPA range of 3.7-3.84
- Cum Laude, GPA range of 3.5-3.69
